Your temporomandibular joints, also known as TMJ’s are situated on each side of your face. This important joint includes muscles and ligaments into a joint shaped like a ball and socket that works to open and close your mouth as you talk, eat, or move your jaw in any way. Oftentimes, this joint can become sore and painful when you first wake up or try to eat and talk. If it hurts to open and close your mouth, your TMJ’s could be inflamed. Temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMD, is a condition that inflames or damages this joint and causes extreme pain.

Some triggers to TMD include arthritis, injuries, tooth alignment, jaw alignment, stress, teeth grinding while you sleep, and the dislocation of the jaw. The first step to overcoming this stressful condition is always to seek diagnosis, so your dentist can find the best course of action for your unique needs.
